SUMMARY:The Vale Columbia Center on Sustainable International Investment presents\: Towards a New Generation of Investment Policies - UNCTAD's Investment Policy Framework for Sustainable Development (IPFSD)
DESCRIPTION:UNCTAD has developed a comprehensive Investment Policy Framework for Sustainable Development (IPFSD) to assist governments in mobilizing investment and ensuring its positive contribution to sustainable development. IPFSD consists of (1) a set of Core Principles for Investment Policymaking, (2) guidelines for national investment policies, and (3) options for designing international investment agreements (IIAs), accompanied by annotations to the IPFSD, which are also published in this year's World Investment Report 2012. IPFSD is a living document powered by an online platform (http\://investmentpolicyhub.org), where investment stakeholders can comment on the different areas covered by the IPFSD, share experiences, raise questions and make suggestions. The introduction of the UNCTAD Framework by Elisabeth Tuerk, Officer in Charge of UNCTAD's Section on IIAs, will offer an opportunity for New York-based IIA stakeholders to familiarize themselves with IPFSD and to bring their practitioner, academic or civil society perspective to today's debate about shaping a new generation of investment policies.\n\nCo-moderated by Lisa Sachs, Director, VCC.\nSandwiches and refreshments will be served.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by UNCTAD and the Environmental Law Society at Columbia Law School.\n\n \n

SUMMARY:"The Arab Spring's Tall Order\: Security, Politics, Economics and Civil Society"
DESCRIPTION:HRI and Rightslink invite you to a lunch-time discussion with Lotfi Maktouf a Tunisian civil society activist and founder of Almadanya, a Tunisian NGO formed after the revolution to empower people through a series of development and cultural programs. Two years after peaceful demonstrators calling for three and only three demands (freedom, dignity and jobs) forced then president Ben Ali to flee, some question what happened to the Tunisian revolution and its aspirations. How did it shift from jobs to polygamy, from freedom to gender separation in public places and in schools, and from dignity to criminalizing blasphemy? Mr. Maktouf will discuss the challenges and tasks facing post-revolution Tunisia as well as discussing the broader consequences of fundamental ideological shifts on the region's social fabric, social dynamics, human rights, the place and value of the law, security and economics. \nLotfi Maktouf graduated from Tunis, Paris-Sorbonne and Harvard law schools. Member of the New York Bar, he practiced international corporate and tax law in Wall Street and then served for four years as Senior Counselor at the International Monetary Fund based in Washington, D.C. Since the Tunisian revolution, he became active in Tunisia via Almadanya.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness meditation is a technique of focus, calm and insight, in which the resources and wisdom of the body and mind are used to learn how to cope effectively with stress and to be more fully present in each moment of our lives. It is also a skill that can be learned. Polly Wheat, MD (CUMC) and Jane Fried (CUMC) will introduce the seven-week MBSR course. In the course, participants observe how stress unfolds in their lives, their responses to it, and how mindfulness practice ameliorates it. Participants learn and practice a variety of stress reduction techniques, including mindful movement incorporating gentle yoga postures, and will also receive guided meditation CDs. Alongside the meditation practice, the classes incorporate group discussions centering on the experiences working with mindfulness meditation practices. A schedule for the course will be outlined. Contact\: wellness@law.columbia.edu.

The introduction of the UNCTAD Framework by Elisabeth Tuerk, Officer in Charge of UNCTAD's Section on IIAs, will offer an opportunity for New York-based IIA stakeholders to familiarize themselves with IPFSD and to bring their practitioner, academic or civil society perspective to today's debate about shaping a new generation of investment policies.\n\nLise Johnson, Lead Investment Law & Policy Researcher, VCC, will serve as commentator.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by UNCTAD.\n\n

SUMMARY:Careers in Law Teaching Program Lunchtime Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:"DEVELOPING YOUR RESEARCH AGENDA - GENERATING PAPER IDEAS AND THEN FOLLOWING THROUGH" \n\n\nFull-time teachers are generally classed as "academic," research-centered, or "clinical," practice-centered. Long ago, law schools filled entry-level academic positions based on credentials such as law school grades, journal experience, and other badges of accomplishment. Although formal credentials remain important, in recent years appointments committees have increasingly sought candidates with a scholarly track record that shows promise of blossoming into a full-scale set of research projects. If and when you try to obtain an academic position, you will be expected to have a "scholarly agenda," i.e., a set of themes or topics that connects your initial and future projects in a way that will, if all goes according to plan, establish you as a legal scholar with a distinctive voice and something to say. (Aspiring clinicians might face this as well.) This session will focus on how you develop a scholarly agenda -- or at least how to think about having one -- before you have had a sustained opportunity to work as a legal scholar. \nSPEAKERS\:\nVincent Blasi, Corliss Lamont Professor of Civil Liberties \nTrevor Morrison, Liviu Librescu Professor of Law; Faculty Co-Director, Center for Constitutional Governance; Co-Chair, Hertog Program on Law and National Security\n**Pizza and refreshments will be served** \n\nAll workshops are audio recorded and posted on the CILTP webpagehttp\://www.law.columbia.edu/careers/law_teaching \n\nFor more information, contact\: gsoto@law.columbia.edu

SUMMARY:Anthony Graves, Death Row Exoneree
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Graves will speak about being condemned to death even though innocent, living for years in solitary confinement and picking up his life after release. This program is presented in conjunction with the Externship on Constitutional Rights Enforcement in Capital, Habeas and Prison Cases. All are welcome to attend.About Anthony Graves\:Anthony \nGraves is known by many as “Death Row Exoneree #138”. But he is known by those \nclose to him as a loving son, brother, father and friend, who was taken away \nfrom them at a young age. Anthony lost eighteen years of his life when he was \nwrongly convicted of a brutal crime and incarcerated in Texas prisons. He spent \ntwelve of those years on death row, and sixteen years in solitary \nconfinement. Anthony was \nultimately vindicated in our criminal justice system, although he will never get \nback those eighteen years. He will never be able to raise his children or \nwitness the birth of his grandchildren. Today, less than two years after his \nrelease, Anthony is an accomplished motivational speaker; community advocate; \nconsultant and investigator in both the legal and criminal justice systems. He \nhas presented at numerous Continuing Legal Education workshops on ethics. He \nalso serves on the Board of The Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty; \nco-hosts The Prison Show weekly on 90.1FM; and is now launching The Anthony \nGraves Foundation, to inspire at-risk youth to dream and believe. Anthony is \ncommitted to sharing his story, to inspire others to not only live life to the \nfullest every day, but live life in search of truth and justice.Co-hosted by Social Justice Initiatives and the Criminal Justice Action Network (CJAN)
