Rex Heinke '75 Named Top Appellate Lawyer in Los Angeles
Rex S. Heinke ’75 was named “Los Angeles Appellate Lawyer of the Year” for 2010 in the peer-reviewed publication Best Lawyers in America.
A partner in the Los Angeles office of Akin Gump, Heinke has handled hundreds of appeals, writs, and motions in federal and state courts throughout the country. These legal actions have involved many issues, from administrative law to complex business disputes to wrongful termination. Heinke has also served as lead trial and appellate counsel on behalf of newspapers, television networks, motion picture studios, and web sites in First Amendment, intellectual property, entertainment, media, and internet disputes.
Heinke’s interest in appellate law began at the Law School, when he participated in the final round of the Harlan Fiske Stone Moot Court Competition. That interest was given a boost early in his law practice, when Heinke handled First Amendment cases that went on appeal. (Among his Columbia classes was Dean Benno Schmidt’s seminar on journalism and the First Amendment.) Heinke’s success led colleagues to ask for his assistance with their appeals work, and he subsequently decided to devote his practice to appellate law.
