Andrew Shapiro '94 Nominated for Assistant Secretary, Political-Military Affairs

New York, May 28, 2009 — President Barack Obama has named Andrew J. Shapiro ’94 to be Assistant Secretary for Political-Military Affairs in the Department of State. This position oversees the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, the primary link between the State Department and the Department of Defense.

Shapiro is currently a senior advisor to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. From 2001 to 2009, he served as an advisor to Senator Clinton, first as a legislative assistant and then as senior defense and foreign policy advisor. Previously, Shapiro was counsel to the Justice Department's International Competition Policy Advisory Committee, and was an associate at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C.

In 1994 Shapiro earned a J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and a master’s degree in international affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He received a B.A. in diplomatic history from the University of Pennsylvania.

Shapiro is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and the International Institute of Strategic Studies. He is recipient of the Gold Star Wives of America Appreciation Award and the National Guard Association’s Patrick Henry Award.
