Office of Corporate & Foundation Relations Procures More than $600,000 in Grants
In addition to fundraising from alumni and other individuals, Columbia Law School actively engages in fundraising from institutional sources such as corporations, private foundations, and government agencies. Funds raised from institutional sources are with few exceptions limited to targeted programs, projects and activities, such as clinics, conferences, visiting professorships, scholarships, or research projects.
Columbia Law School is pleased to announce these recent gifts from institutional benefactors:
• $300,000 from the North Carolina Department of Justice for the National State Attorneys General Program, which is investigating the effectiveness of North Carolina’s anti-predatory lending law (it is hoped the research will have import for other states);
• $25,000 from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation for the Presidential Transition Project of the National State Attorneys General Program. The gift will assist with federal transition efforts underway by career employees, other state organizations such as the National Governor’s Association, and with issue advocates, most of whom are in D.C.;
• $61,000 from the firm of Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu through the Japan Foundation, an annual grant which provides scholarships for several students each year with a strong background or interest in Japan, Japanese cultural and legal studies, and international law;
• $100,000 from the Microsoft Corporation to the Kernochan Center for Law and the Arts to support international visiting IP scholars, who come to do research on U.S. intellectual property law, attend classes and workshops, and discuss current issues and their research with Columbia faculty;
• $151,000 from Revenue Watch Institute for the Human Rights Institute in its extensive project on extractive (mining) sector contracts. The project focuses on issues of confidentiality and contract transparency that have created barriers to promoting fair and accountable arrangements more likely to benefit the countries involved.
