Wouter Schmit Jongbloed
J.S.D. Dissertation Overview
Wouter’s scholarship draws on his background and interest in the international law and economics of growth and development. He is completing his dissertation in the law and economics of export restrictions, arguing that current case law and policy at the WTO does not sufficiently take account of novel economic insights into path dependent growth. Through his law and economics analysis he plans to show that by understanding economic growth in emerging markets as fundamentally path dependent, or architecture conforming, the reigning distinction between the aspirational and functional legitimacy of the World Trade Organization conveys a too narrow conception of development and growth. Prof. Pistor, Prof. Janow, and Prof. Ocampo support his work at Columbia.
He was the managing editor of the Yearbook on International Investment Law and Policy (OUP) for several years and co-edited, together with Karl P. Sauvant and Lisa Sachs, the volume Sovereign Investment: Concerns and Policy Reactions (OUP, 2012) to which he was the lead-author on the introductory chapter.
While at Columbia he worked with the Columbia Center on Sustainable International Investment. He also has previous experience in the international arbitration practices of several law firms, including Shearman & Sterling and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. He, moreover, taught an introductory class in jurisprudence at Leiden University.
